How to Cite a Movie in MLA
Learn how to cite a movie in MLA style, with Works Cited formats, in-text citation examples, and common fixes.
The fast MLA movie citation format
If you need to cite a movie in MLA, start with the movie title.
That surprises some students because books usually start with the author's name. Movies have directors, producers, screenwriters, actors, studios, and distributors. MLA handles that by putting the title first in the basic Works Cited entry, then adding the director and publication details.
The official MLA Style Center gives this basic pattern for a movie or video entry: title, director, publisher or distributor, and date. See MLA's own film citation guidance at MLA Style Center.
Use this format for most papers:
Movie Title. Directed by Director First Name Last Name, Studio or Distributor, Year.Example:
Get Out. Directed by Jordan Peele, Universal Pictures, 2017.Your in-text citation should match the first part of the Works Cited entry. Since this entry starts with Get Out, your in-text citation uses the title:
The opening scene builds tension before the audience knows the danger (*Get Out* 00:02:15-00:03:10).If you mention the movie title in your sentence, you do not need to repeat it in parentheses:
In *Get Out*, the opening scene builds tension before the audience knows the danger (00:02:15-00:03:10).That is the basic answer. The rest of the problem is choosing the right version for the movie you watched.
Use this Works Cited template
MLA citations follow a container system. In plain English, that means you cite the work itself, then the place where you found it when that place matters.
For a movie you watched as a film, DVD, or standard release, use:
Title of Movie. Directed by First Name Last Name, Production Company or Distributor, Year.Example:
Moonlight. Directed by Barry Jenkins, A24, 2016.Notice the punctuation.
The title goes in italics. The director's name uses normal first name last name order because the entry does not start with the director. The studio or distributor comes next. The year closes the entry.
If your professor wants MLA 9, this format fits MLA's current source-container approach. Purdue OWL also explains that MLA citations use core elements such as title, contributors, publisher, and publication date, though the exact elements vary by source type. You can check Purdue's MLA guide at Purdue OWL.
If you often mix MLA source types, read our guide to bibliography vs. works cited. A movie citation belongs on a Works Cited page when you quote, paraphrase, or discuss the film in your paper.
How to cite a movie from Netflix, Hulu, or another streaming service
If the streaming platform matters, include it.
Use this format:
Title of Movie. Directed by First Name Last Name, Production Company or Distributor, Year. Streaming Platform.Example:
The Irishman. Directed by Martin Scorsese, Netflix, 2019. Netflix. That example looks repetitive because Netflix produced and hosted the film. That can happen. Do not panic. MLA citations often look plain and a little awkward when the same company fills more than one role.
If the platform did not produce the movie, the entry may look like this:
Pride & Prejudice. Directed by Joe Wright, Focus Features, 2005. Netflix.Add the platform when your reader might need to know which version you watched. This matters for restored cuts, streaming-only releases, added subtitles, commentary editions, and classroom assignments where your professor asked you to cite the exact source.
You do not always need the streaming URL. MLA often lets you omit URLs unless your instructor requires them. If your class has a stricter rule, follow that rule.
For bigger projects, citation details multiply fast. A citation checker can help you catch fake titles, wrong years, and sources that do not match your bibliography. Our overview of best citation verification tools explains how these tools differ from basic citation generators.
How to cite a movie when you focus on the director
Sometimes your paper discusses the director more than the movie as a general work.
For example, a film studies essay may argue that Jordan Peele uses silence, framing, and close-ups in a specific way. In that case, you can start the Works Cited entry with the director.
Use this format:
Director Last Name, First Name, director. Movie Title. Studio or Distributor, Year.Example:
Peele, Jordan, director. Get Out. Universal Pictures, 2017.Then your in-text citation uses the director's last name because that is the first element in the Works Cited entry:
The scene holds on Chris's face as the room turns hostile (Peele 00:37:42-00:39:05).MLA's in-text citation rule is simple: the parenthetical citation should point to the first element of the Works Cited entry. MLA explains this rule in its guidance on in-text citations for films.
Do not start with the director just because you know the director's name. Start with the title for a normal movie citation. Start with the director only when your argument treats that person's role as the main source.
How to cite a movie quote in MLA
When you quote spoken dialogue, cite the movie and the timestamp.
Use this pattern:
"Quoted dialogue" (*Movie Title* hour:minute:second-hour:minute:second).Example:
Chris asks, "Why us?" as the film turns the family visit into a trap (*Get Out* 01:17:22-01:17:30).If you already named the film in the sentence, cite only the timestamp:
In *Get Out*, Chris asks, "Why us?" as the film turns the family visit into a trap (01:17:22-01:17:30).Use timestamps because movies do not have page numbers. If you cite the whole film, you can leave the timestamp out. If you cite a scene, shot, line, or moment, add the timestamp.
Be careful with movie quotes you find online. Quote databases often get lines wrong. Watch the scene again and quote from the version you used.
This is where students lose easy points. The Works Cited entry may look fine, but the in-text citation points to the wrong title, skips the timestamp, or quotes a line that does not appear in the film. It helps verify references against academic databases, though movies and other media sources may still need manual review.
How to cite a scene without quoting dialogue
You can cite a film scene even when you do not quote anyone.
Example:
The camera follows Chiron from behind during the school hallway scene, which makes the viewer feel his isolation (*Moonlight* 00:24:10-00:25:02).That citation tells your reader exactly where to look.
Do not cite a two-hour film when your claim depends on a 50-second scene. Give the timestamp. Your professor should not have to hunt for the evidence.
If your paper compares scenes from different films, timestamps matter even more:
Both films use the dinner table as a place where politeness hides threat (*Get Out* 00:37:42-00:39:05; *Parasite* 00:52:18-00:54:00).MLA lets you cite multiple sources in one parenthetical citation. Separate them with a semicolon. Yes, MLA uses semicolons there. Use one because the style requires it.
How to cite a movie on YouTube
A full movie on YouTube needs a slightly different entry because YouTube is the container.
Use this format:
Title of Movie. Directed by First Name Last Name, Studio or Distributor, Year. YouTube, uploaded by Account Name, Day Month Year, URL.Example:
Night of the Living Dead. Directed by George A. Romero, Continental Distributing, 1968. YouTube, uploaded by Public Domain Films, 12 Oct. 2020, URL.Replace URL with the actual link if your instructor wants URLs.
Only cite a YouTube upload if it is the version you used. If you watched a licensed version through a library database, cite the database or platform instead. If you watched a random upload with missing scenes, bad subtitles, or altered audio, your citation should show that.
MLA has separate guidance for online videos at the MLA Style Center. Use that source when you cite a short video, interview clip, trailer, or video essay instead of a full film.
How to cite a movie with performers
Add performers when your paper discusses acting.
Use this format:
Movie Title. Directed by First Name Last Name, performances by Actor First Name Last Name and Actor First Name Last Name, Studio or Distributor, Year.Example:
Black Panther. Directed by Ryan Coogler, performances by Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan, Marvel Studios, 2018.Only include performers who matter to your argument. You do not need to list the whole cast.
If your paragraph analyzes one actor's performance, name that actor in your prose and cite the movie:
Lupita Nyong'o changes Nakia's tone when the scene moves from public duty to private grief (*Black Panther* 00:46:30-00:47:22).Your Works Cited entry can include her as a performer if her performance shapes your argument.
How to cite a movie in an essay paragraph
A movie citation has two jobs.
First, your sentence should make a claim. Second, the citation should point to the evidence.
Weak version:
The movie uses lighting to show fear (*Get Out*).Better version:
The basement scene uses low light and tight framing to show Chris losing control before the auction begins (*Get Out* 01:05:40-01:07:12).The better version gives your reader a scene, a technique, and a timestamp. That is what film analysis needs.
If you quote dialogue, keep the quote short. Film papers get stronger when you analyze what the camera, sound, editing, and performance do. Do not turn the paragraph into a transcript.
For citation-heavy papers, keep your Works Cited page clean as you write. If you use BibTeX for research sources, the free Check My Thesis BibTeX cleaner can format, validate, and deduplicate entries. It will not write your film analysis, but it can stop your bibliography from becoming a mess.

The farmhouse scenes use blocked exits to make the house feel unsafe from the inside (*Night of the Living Dead* 00:31:12-00:33:00).Common MLA movie citation mistakes
The most common mistake is starting with the director when the paper does not focus on the director. For a normal citation, start with the movie title.
The second mistake is skipping italics. Movie titles take italics in MLA:
*Moonlight*Do not put movie titles in quotation marks. MLA uses quotation marks for shorter works, such as articles, poems, short stories, and some episodes.
The third mistake is citing IMDb instead of the movie. IMDb can help you find names and dates, but it is not the film itself. If your evidence comes from the movie, cite the movie.
The fourth mistake is adding too much. You do not need every producer, actor, editor, composer, and distributor. Add contributors when your paper discusses their work.
The fifth mistake is letting a citation generator do the thinking. Citation generators can save time, but they often guess wrong when a film has multiple release dates, international distributors, or streaming versions. If you use one, compare the result against MLA's official examples.
Our guide to top citation verification tools explains why verification matters more than formatting when you work with academic sources. For movies, you still need judgment because databases may not treat films the same way they treat journal articles.

Peele, Jordan, director. Get Out. Universal Pictures, 2017.Do I need a timestamp for a movie in MLA?
Use a timestamp when you cite a line, scene, shot, or moment.
You can skip the timestamp when you discuss the film as a whole. But if your paragraph depends on one scene, add the time range.
Do I include the streaming service?
Include the streaming service when it helps your reader identify the version you watched.
For a standard film release, you may not need it. For a Netflix original, library database version, restored edition, or platform-specific version, include it.
Are movie titles italicized in MLA?
Yes. Italicize full movie titles in MLA.
Use:
*Parasite*Do not use:
"Parasite"Does a movie go in Works Cited or a bibliography?
In MLA, sources you cite in your paper go on a Works Cited page. A bibliography can include works you read or watched but did not cite, but most MLA student papers use Works Cited. If the terms blur together, read Works Cited vs. bibliography before you format the final page.
The safest way to cite a movie in MLA
Use the movie title first. Add the director, studio or distributor, and year. Use timestamps when you analyze a scene or quote dialogue.
That covers most student papers.
Before you submit, check three things: the Works Cited entry starts with the same element you use in your in-text citation, the movie title is italicized, and the timestamp points to the exact scene you discuss. That small check can save you from the kind of citation error professors notice fast.
