Every grade, correctly weighted
Calculate your credit-weighted average, your final degree grade including the thesis, or convert a foreign grade to the German 1.0–4.0 scale.
Enter each module with its grade and credits (ECTS or any weight). Works for any grading scale — German 1–5, GPA, percentages.
Your examination regulations (Prüfungsordnung) decide how grades are weighted and rounded — this calculator follows the common credit-weighted convention.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my grade average with ECTS credits?
Multiply each grade by its credits, add everything up, and divide by the total credits. That is exactly what the weighted-average tab does — modules with more ECTS count proportionally more.
How is the final degree grade calculated?
Most examination regulations weight the coursework average and the thesis by their credit shares — for example 150 ECTS of coursework and a 12-ECTS thesis. Some programs weight the thesis higher or drop the worst module; check your Prüfungsordnung.
What is the modified Bavarian formula?
The KMK conversion formula German universities use for foreign grades: x = 1 + 3 · (Nmax − Nd) / (Nmax − Nmin). It maps any scale linearly onto the German 1.0–4.0 range using the best grade and the minimum pass of the source system.
Is 2.3 a good grade in Germany?
Yes — German grades run from 1.0 (best) to 4.0 (minimum pass). 1.0–1.5 counts as very good, 1.6–2.5 as good, 2.6–3.5 as satisfactory, and 3.6–4.0 as sufficient.
